The Need for African Educational Curriculum to Accommodate People Living with Disability and others

As part of the Mission establishing the Rebuild Afrika Foundation, which is to be giving hope to the hopeless and supporting the vulnerable children, especially the girl child and people living with disability.

Our research team paid an empowerment visit to the Module Cole school of disability and treatment home, to ascertain the impact of Covid-19 Pandemic on vulnerable children and the current economic hardship on people living with disability.

The school was established by late Mrs Modupe Cole at Surulere-Aguda, in the year 1960 before the Lagos State government took over the school in 1978.

As an advocate of equity, equality and social justice, I want to call on the ministry of education and every other stakeholders to review the educational policy and curriculum to accommodate people living with disability and those children with special needs with passion for learning.

Our research and my visitation to these children from time to time has exposed me to the fact that they are intelligent regardless of their physical condition.

Our recent research on factors affecting the education of children and young girls living with Disability exposed us to the bitter experiences and tough challenges they face on a daily basis. some of our research findings according to the survey and discussion with the Vice principal (vocation) of Modupe Cole, school and treatment home for people living with disability:

1- 85% of the total number of Special children and adults in the school have been abandoned by their parents.

2- Discrimination, especially those coming from their homes (reason they are joyous when they see people coming close to them)

3- Some are permanently retain on their bed, where they feed and bath them.

4- Lack of Higher institute of learning for People living with Disability, to accommodate the senior ones who are sitting for the West Africa examination council (WAEC)....

According to the Vice Principal administration, some of the senior students are preparing for the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC), The Rebuild Afrika Foundation and the school authority are appealing to the examiners to take into consideration people living with disability to accommodate them in the exam and give special conditions to their own examination due to their health, physical and psychological status.
