The recent announcement made by the Ondo State Government regarding the upgrading of the Ondo State Polytechnic, Popularly known as Rufus Giwa Polytechnic has generated mixed reactions among the students, staffs of the academic institutions, and also nobles of Owo origin.
It's an established fact that the former administration led by the late Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu proposed the conversion of the polytechnic into a technology driven institution of excellence. The initial proposal was for the Polytechnic to scrap the ND and HND programme, and to be upgraded into a Bachelor of Technology (B.tech) awarding institution.
The announcement of this present administration didn't reflect the intention of the former administration for the Owo local Government based institution.
Although, majority of the APC politicians in Owo local government will not see anything wrong in the move, but concerned indigenes of Owo kingdom and development oriented entrepreneurs like myself are not happy that the administration derailed from the initial proposal and intention for the institution.
This new proposal will limit the academic scope of the institution to only agricultural studies and other agricultural related courses, putting an end to other science and technology courses the school is currently running, as well as other programmes designed to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals.
