The 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and the demand for Permanent Seat in the Security Council by African Countries

The United Nations as a global institution established to provide an avenue for addressing world challenges, conflict between Nations since the World War II, mediating between warring factions affecting leadership and political direction in different countries.

‎Nigeria as a member country of the United Nations have echoed the need for African countries to be integrated into the Security Council as a permanent member. The renewed and recent agitation from the continuous push by African countries spearheaded by the most populous African nation and giant of Africa Nigeria, have gained global attention, support and consideration.

‎Analysing the events that preceded the 81st General Assembly gathering, A permanent member of the UN representing Nigeria, Amb. Jimoh Ibrahim (CFR) was appointed the Head of Finance and Budgets, a position that no Nigerian have held since the creation of the global institution.

‎Furthermore, reviewing and assessing the speech delivered by the Vice President of Nigeria Kashim Shettima to the General Assembly Members and Diplomatic communities in the presence of global powers, the bold presentation and constructive argument on the need for inclusion of African countries into the Security Council as a Permanent Member maybe be approved in the coming days and weeks.

‎If the proposal is favourably considered by the United Nations, African countries such as South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Egypt, Morocco and Nigeria are some countries that have been shortlisted by diplomats, media groups, NGOs and right activists for consideration.

‎With Nigeria having a better and brighter chance due to the population, resources, influence on the global stage, history of military intervention in regional conflicts and it multicultural society making it the nucleus of Africa, and a potential global power in the nearest future.
