The trend of kidnapping of traditional rulers in Southwest Nigeria is increasing on a daily, weekly and monthly basis with the recent abduction of the traditional ruler of Odo-Oriya community in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, Adeniyi Adelana.

The 60-year-old traditional ruler was kidnapped on Saturday night (13th of June, 2026) during an attack on his palace by gunmen.  Yoruba village heads and traditional rulers were also the target of terrorists ransacking Yoruba communities in Kwara state.

Earlier reports indicated that over 30 traditional rulers have fled their palaces due to fear of attack and constant wave of terror on communities in Kwara South which are occupied by Yoruba ethnc group.  Findings show that some of the affected traditional rulers are from Omugo, Afin, Oreke, Oreke Oke-Igbo, Olohuntele, Alabe, Ganmu Ailehri, Ologanmo, and Igbo Agbon communities.

While some have been away from their domains for months, others have been out for nearly a year.

List of Yoruba towns and traditional rulers kidnapped or killed by Fulani armed militias according to eyewitnesses and survivors;

1. Oba Salman Olatunji Aweda, the ruler of the Olayinka community, Kwara state (Died in captivity of kidnappers after ransom payment).

9. Alara of Ara,  Oba Adebayo Fatoba (Escaped), Ekiti State.

10. Onikoro of Ikoro, Oba Peter Aremu, Ekiti LGA (Murdered), Kwara state.

With unaccounted numbers of rural dwellers and commoners dying in the hands of these islamic Fulani jihadists determined to destroy the peace and economy of the Yoruba communities in North Central and Southwest Nigeria through kidnapping, killings and ransacking of communities.

The Yorubas, a tribe known to be courageous and bold, descendants of royals and bloodline of warriors have turned to cowards despite our level of education and exposure. Our Value system have deteriorated and minds of the average youth preoccupied with foolishness, fear and frivolities.

While we are living in fear, following social media trends, praying to God to help us end insecurity, the terrorists are organizing and planning to strike the next target, where and who is next?

Kidnapping and Killing of a king is a war strategy to spread fear and terror "strike the head and the body will fall" If the king can be handpicked from his community, it's a message that none in the community is safe.

This perception will make villagers and dwellers in the community to flee and desert the community because it's not safe to stay, which will have adverse effects on economic activities in the community and cripple the growth of such community.
