Africa's Longest Serving Presidents and the justification for military take over/palace coup

Last week, the citizens of Gabon in numbers celebrated the topple of hereditary democracy by military chiefs. President Ali Bongo who is seeking third term in office came to power following the death of his father, Omar Bongo, in 2009, after more than four decades in power.


Map shows seven military coups in sub-saharan Africa in two years with Gabon been the latest.

Teodoro Obiang | Equatorial Guinea | 44 years (since 1979)


Paul Biya | Cameroon | 41 years (since 1982)


Yoweri Museveni | Uganda | 37 years (since 1986)


Isaias Afwerki | Eritrea | 30 years (since 1993)


Dennis Sassou | Congo | 26 yrs (1997)
